**Volunteers Wanted**
At the 2012 banquet, we announced the need for volunteers to run our 2013 shows. We want to thank those who have stepped forward to become new volunteers; however, we presently do not have enough volunteers to properly run the May show. Remember, Tottenham Equestrians is your show. It is not run by paid professionals, but rather a group of people who generously offer their time and talents to organize and make your show day happen. They are the reason you enjoy a great show at very affordable rates. Please find a way to support your club on show day with volunteer assistance. Contact TottenhamEquestrians@hotmail.com ASAP with names, phone numbers, and e-mail info of your volunteers.
We are still looking for help in the following areas:
1. Food Booth
2. Pre-show set-up of Western trail equipment & English jumps
3. Show day changing of English jumps
4. End of show day clean-up
5. English Entry Booth
Your club thanks you!
President’s Message – Marie Krawczyk
Welcome to The Fence Post, our 2013 on-line newsletter! We are excited about the coming show season and hope our riders are too!
The organizing volunteers have been very busy over the winter months developing ways to improve the show for 2013. As you read the rest of the newsletter, look for significant changes in certain classes and note whether these changes will affect your show day. Also please take some time to become familiar with the full set of updated rules and regulations at www.TottenhamEquestrians.ca.
Hopefully you’ve already filled out your membership form and popped it in the mail. Remember that you can also download your entry forms to complete at home so that you’re super organized on show day. May 26th will be here sooner than you think!
Looking forward to seeing you all in May and wishing you an amazing show year!

Rules and Regulations (changes & reminders)
Every Rider and Coach should read the complete 2013 Rules and Regulations that are posted online. They tell you what equipment is legal, what classes you can cross enter, what can eliminate you, and much more important information.
The three Divisions that have major changes this year are:
English Novice Division - has been split into two Divisions, one at 18” and one at 2’. You may enter either of them but not both.
Western/English Leadline Division - See below for some rules that need to be emphasized. For full rules on this division, please read your Rules and Regs.
- Only one handler is allowed in the ring and that handler must be an adult of 18 years and over and neatly attired.
- A contestant cannot be tied, buckled or fastened in the saddle in any manner or by any means during competition.
- A contestant must have his or her feet in the stirrups and the stirrups must be securely fastened to the saddle.
- Riders must be a minimum of 3 years of age, and a maximum of 9 years of age as of Jan 1st ofthe current year.
-
Rein back (backing up) will not be asked for in Leadline.
Western Games Division is now split into three Sections which will focus on rider skill and ability levels rather than age splits.
- Novice - entries are performing the timed patterns at the trot or slow canter and are likely still learning to ride the patterns correctly.
- Intermediate - entries are performing the timed patterns at the canter or gallop.
- Advanced - entries are consistently performing the timed patterns at the gallop at a competitive level.
If there are insufficient entries in any Novice or Advanced speed class, it will be combined with Intermediate.
We also would like to reinforce some old rules:
-
For the safety of spectators and other riders, riders may not go faster than a trot outside of show ring and warm-up areas.
-
As we have no chute for our Western Games, this means that a games horse may not go faster than a walk until its front legs have entered the arena. Horses may be led to the gate.
- All riders while on a horse anywhere on the show grounds, must be wearing a certified helmet with the chin strap properly done up and proper heeled footwear.
-
All English and Western riders must use a different number for each horse and rider combination (except Leadline and Starter riders).
- When classes are split, riders and coaches may not alter which group a rider is assigned to.
- It is up to the rider to notify the in-gates of any ring conflicts.
Reminder of some rules for warm-up in the main rings
- No one may enter the ring until the gate-master has checked the jumps and opened the gate for riders.
- This is not a schooling or lesson or training ring, - it is a "go round see the jumps” ring. The unlimited warm-up is in the grass warm-up ring.
- *Riders must all wear the correct number, boots and helmet.
- *Riders must call out their intended jumps to avoid head-on collisions, and cannot monopolize one jump.
- *Riders or their helper are responsible to replace knocked down jumps right away so others may jump them.
- *Juniors must have a responsible person with them in the ring.

A Sleep-Over with Your Horse!
Join the Tottenham Equestrians' Youth Team! On August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, the Ontario Youth Team Tournament is being held in Paris, Ontario. This three-day event is the perfect opportunity to represent your club and to introduce your horse to a higher-level show. Working as a team, you’ll join other Tottenham Equestrian members to compete against show clubs from all over Ontario. Classes include English & Western Leadline, Walk/Trot/Jog, English Flat and Over Fences, Western Performance and Speed Events.
At this three-day competition, you’ll learn to work together with a team while also improving your individual skills. Making new friends happens easily at games and parties such as corn roasts, hosted by certain show clubs. This can also be part of your family vacation since many families travel with their riders to enjoy the adventure.
Ready for a fun, challenging weekend of team building and horse showing??? Please let Kim know if you are interested ASAP. The deadline to confirm attendance is June 1st.
